The purpose of this initiative, ‘The Pope John Paul II Award’ in this diocese is to enable young people to live their faith and to witness to that faith lived out in the parish community.
I concur fully with the late Holy Father’s sentiments expressed so beautifully in Galway in 1979, “I believe in youth”. The youth of today will be the leaders in the church and in society in the future.
The components of ‘The Pope John Paul II Award’ comprises parish engagement – liturgical and pastoral, social awareness and an eventual written presentation of their endeavours.
Bishop Seamus Hegarty
In the past year in our parish Fr Chris and Stella Jojo and Rooyn Whitehouse coordinated our John Paul II award group.
We had 23 young men and women who took part in this initiative throughout the academic year. They participated in a range of activities ranging from
- Organising and assisting at several masses at parish and diocesan level.
- Collecting food stuff and preparing hampers for those in need at Christmas as part of the SVP Christmas Appeal.
- Some worked at the sorting centre for the humanitarian appeal for the immigrants seeking shelter in areas of Europe.
- They helped to organise and participated in the Public Way of the Cross on Good Friday
They organised and participated in a sponsored climb of Mount Errigal to raise much needed funds for the Parish Water Project.
