Colleen Gormley
Over the Past year a young lady has been singing solo at the vigil Mass in the Church of the Immaculate Conception. She has made quite an impression through her singing talent both on the celebration of the  Mass and those attending. It speaks volumes for her when at times the congregation has spontaneosly applauded at the end of a hymn. So as quite a few people have been asking who she is we decided to track her down. We knew that she is a friend of Father Michaels so he gave us the contact details and Colleen graciously agreed to answer a few questions below so that we can get to know her a bit better

Which Church do you attend?

St. Patrick’s Claudy is my parish church so normally attend there and waterside churches

How long have you lived in the area

I’ve lived in Claudy from I was born.

Is there a history of music in your family

Not particularly, however my father is a lovely singer and my aunt Linda used to play in a band

What / Who are your musical influences

Oh I could go on forever. Contemporary American Country music is my prime influence- Leann Womack is my favourite singer however Jodee Messiana, Chely Wright, Faith Hill, Dixie Chicks, Keith Urban and Garth Brooks all influence my music.

I also love Irish Traditional Folk music- Cara Dillon, Mary and Frances Black, Brian Kennedy and Tommy Flemming. Liam Lawton also is a musical influence regarding my music in chapel.

What have been the highlights of your musical career to date:

I don’t have too many highlights. I suppose winning a talent competition in Earth Café Roc when I was 14 serves as a highlight for me as the prize was to record an album an that’s where my music started to become important to me. Also, I was a contestant on a talent show on TG4 last year which was a great experience. Furthermore, going to Lourdes with Fr. Mc Caughy and members of the parish serves as a highlight for me; I had an amazing time.

Do you sing in a band or a group       No.

Have you produced any demos or records

Just a few- the 1st when I was 14 due to winning the competition at Earth. And I recorded a some of my own songs and a few hymns however not professionally.

Do you have a website or myspace (for your music)

I don’t.

How did you get involved in singing at the vigil Mass

As a child, I sang in my chapel choir and then went on to play the organ for them however in regards to actually singing at mass, it was through Fr.Mc Caughy. He invited me in one day after singing at a wedding to sing at 6pm mass in Top of the Hill chapel.

How important is your faith to you

Very. I believe without faith, you have nothing.

What is your favourite hymn

That’s a difficult one, as I have so many favourites but “Nearer my go to thee” and “Voice of an Angel”, and “Holy Spirit” are three I really love particularly for their words.

What is your favourite song

Possibly the hardest question as I have so many! I don’t even think I have an all-time favourite. This week “The Dance” by Garth Brooks is my favourite. Lyrics mean a lot to me.

Have you any ambitions for the future in relation to your music career
I have lots of ambitions but achieving them is another issue!! Ideally I’d love to get an opportunity to break into the music world and follow a career such as that of Cara Dillon or Mary Black. Also, I hope to record a CD within the coming year composed of a few inspirational hymns, original songs and Irish-folk. One more ambition- I hope to go to Nashville and get a real feel for American Country music. A real dream would be to have the opportunity to sing in the Bluebird Café!

Any other plans for the future

Go to study at Trinity this year, become involved in Camp America for a summer, re-visit Lourdes and Australia, go to Fatima and Mediguorie and also to travel…if I ever overcome the fear of flying!!
